Transferring legs [sic - logs] from the light railway to the skids

Supervised by an officer, this image shows soldiers working in an open-air sawmill carrying and lifting logs on to – or perhaps from? – a light railway wagon. Judging by the height of the logs, they were most likely to be used as trench supports.

There were all sorts of soldier working parties during the conflict. In his autobiography, ‘Goodbye to All That, the poet Robert Graves writes about his various roles in ‘carrying-parties, ‘fatigues-parties, ‘working parties and ‘night patrols, and describes the many tasks and dangers involved when carrying out these duties.
